SteepandCheap daily dose 9.8.09

When you're walking around New York City, you'll feel mysterious drips of water on hot sunny days. After awhile you figure out they're coming from the air conditioning units hanging out of every window that reach up for 15 or 20 floors. When you start to actually see them, you'll notice that air conditioning units line literally every apartment building up and down every street in the city. Most of the buildings are too old for central air, so these small window units keep everyone cool. The thing that bothers me is that when you're walking around the city--and I'm being generous here--maybe 20% of the people I see look like they could competently install an AC window unit. I can't believe those things aren't falling out of windows dozens of times a day.
